With only two months to go until the state election, the Fairfield Champion begins a three-part look at how the contest is going. In the state seat of Cabramatta, Labor MP Reba Meagher will go head to head with Liberal Party Candidate Victor Smith, a resident of Cabramatta. Victor Smith
LIBERAL Party candidate Victor Smith, a long-time resident of Cabramatta, said he believed there was ‘‘no contest’’ between him and Reba Meagher. ‘‘Reba Meagher has no chance of retaining her seat, if you go by the public’s opinion,’’ Mr Smith said. He said he had been talking to local residents for weeks and that the consensus was that Ms Meagher had done little for her electorate in her 12 years in the job. Mr Smith said voters had grown to see him as having a deep, grassroots connection with the community. ‘‘Ms Meagher has been cutting funding to community services in her own electorate,’’ he said. Mr Smith said he had plans to improve education, transport, public health, policing and community services in Cabramatta. He predicts Labor will lose more than half of the seats it holds in NSW. ‘‘The Liberals are the strongest they have been for more than 10 years and are ready to take control of NSW and lead them back to being the principal state in Australia,’’ Mr Smith said. |
